Carotid duplex is an ultrasound of the carotid arteries. The technician applies non-sticky, clear gel to the neck area over the arteries. While applying gentle pressure with the ultrasound probe, images of the carotid artery are obtained.
Carotid arteries are located on either side of the neck and are responsible for the blood supply to the brain and face. The amount of plaque (cholesterol build up) here is usually indicative of the total body plaque burden. High plaque burden in these arteries can give rise to stroke. It is important to screen carotid arteries in patients who previously had a stroke, mini strokes, dizziness, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, and patients greater than 65 years of age.
